Inspector Ian Hicks provided an update from the Safer Neighbourhood Teams from the two wards within the local committee area. He pointed out that these two wards are two of the safest wards in the borough of Sutton and that in these areas the police have constantly achieved 83-84% satisfaction – one of the highest ratings in the London Metropolitan Police. Other updates included:
· Detection rates are one of the highest in the Metropolitan Police, with 73% of minor crimes being resolved.
· There has been a decrease in house burglary, however there has been an increase in shed and garage burglaries. The culprits are known and were imprisoned in June/July 2015 however they have now been released so residents should be alert and follow the advice available to help prevent this kind of crime.
· There has been a significant decrease in vehicle theft.
· The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) set a challenge to reduce crime rates by 20%, Inspector Hicks informed the committee that in the borough the service is on track to achieve this reduction, with higher results of 24-25% prospective reductions in the Carshalton and Clockhouse wards.
Concerns were raised by residents regarding the potential reduction of Police Community Support Officers, and the committee was advised to make representations to the Commissioner regarding the matter. The Committee were also informed that the Council’s Scrutiny Committee was monitoring developments and would be making representations in the New Year,
Members of the Committee and attending residents commended the work of the PCSOs as highly valued.
