Mayor's Announcements

Minutes:

(a) Apologies

Apologies for absence were received from Councillors Doug Hunt, Martin Gonzalez, Vincent Galligan, Richard Broadbent, Daniel Sangster, Richard Marston and Tony Shields.

Apologies for lateness were received from Councillor Holly Ramsey.

(b) Announcements

Anna Cummins, of the Sutton Women’s Centre, was invited to speak as a representative of one of the Mayor’s chosen charities.

The Mayor began announcements with the news that former Councillors Lal Hussain MBE, Lesley O’Connell, Geoffrey Coombs, Roy Bentley and Pamela Cooper had sadly passed away. A minute’s silence was then observed.

Further announcements focused on the performance of Sutton schools to a very high standard, above the national average in both A-level and GCSE results. The Mayor congratulated all the pupils on their hard work and achieving such an excellent set of results and thanked the hard working staff and governors.

The Mayor also reported the unveiling of a new memorial cross in honour of the Men of the Wrythe who fought during the First World War. As part of events to mark the 100th anniversary of Passchendaele, it was decided to erect a new cross where the original once stood. The Mayor thanked all those who made a wonderful day of celebration and commemoration possible.

The Mayor also announced the awards ceremony held in July for the Sutton in Bloom competition, paying tribute to the hard work of the gardeners and growers who put so much effort into establishing and maintaining their gardens. The best entries would represent the borough at the London in Bloom competition.

The announcements concluded with the Mayor’s thanks to departing Strategic Director Tolis Vouyioukas who was taking up the role of Executive Director for Children's Services at Buckinghamshire County Council.
